I grow a few Cannas in my garden. I am always impressed by these stately, exotic and tough flowers.
Here some information on this fabulous plant.
Canna (or Canna lily, although not a true lily) is a genus of approximately twenty species of flowering plants The closest living relations to cannas are the other plant families of the order Zingiberales, that is the gingers, bananas, marantas, heliconias, strelitzias, etc Canna is the only genus in the family Cannaceae. Such a family has almost universally been recognized by taxonomists. Recognizes the family, and assigns it to the order Zingiberales in the clade commelinids, in the monocots.
The species have large, attractive foliage and horticulturists have turned it into a large-flowered, brash, bright and sometimes gaudy, garden plant. In addition, it is one of the world's richest starch sources, and is an agricultural plantAlthough a plant of the tropics, most cultivars have been developed in temperate climates and are easy to grow in most countries of the world as long as they can enjoy about 6 hours average sunlight during the summer. See the Canna cultivar gallery for photographs of Canna cultivars.
The name Canna originates from the Celtic word for a cane or reed

Hi Mum, I love Cannas too - they always flower with such profusion and also their leaves can be of a rich and exotic colour lending the garden a tropical and lush look. Love the information too. Love ML
I have some cannas too. Sadly, they seldom blooms and I don't know why. I have them for almost 3 years and they only bloomed once. Sigh! I love yours. They are beautiful.Blossom Blooms
Great pictures and information.
Thank you!!
Every year I grow red Canna plants in my garden. The plants grow quite quickly and really make big statement.
Love to watch the hummingbirds close up. Yes, we have Hummingbirds in Canada too.
The Ruby-throated Hummingbird Archilochus colubris is the most common and widely distributed of the hummingbirds in Canada.
- Cheers from Canada,
Gisela
simply beautiful!
Hi Titania! You must be Australian, at least by the look of some of your plants. I took photos of almost the same plants last year July and August when we were with my daughter in Cooktown. I hope you are okay! We are all sorry for the victims of the bush fires. It's terrible. Well what I wanted to say is: Your post is very interesting and the flowers are gorgeous!
These are very beautiful i love the color
love ur flower shots
My entry for TF this week : in HERE. Hope you have time to visit . Thanks
Very detailed and very well documented - a great post.
You must have a beautiful garden! And you know so much about the plants! Lovely flowers - and pics!
Interesting text of this beautiful flower and your pics are gorgeous!
My Dad grew cannas. I remember them well.
Also enjoyed your post on Henry Lawson. He and Banjo Paterson chronicled the pioneer spirit so wonderfully.
I love Cannas but lately a lot have had the Canna virus so last year we didn't grow any.
Nice pictures, the yellow flowered one is really a great color.
Hello Titania! Nice to meet you!
Lovely flowers and explanation!
(I never know the names of the flowers I photograph LOOOLL!)

Titania: Beautiful flowers on the opening and a neat show on your site. Congrats on some great choices.
These are such robust flowers. Someone has given me a couple of canna roots, so I hope they grow as well as yours!!
And I love the photos from Today's Flowers, too! I have no idea what they are, but they are such lovely colours! The first one, with the droplets of water on the purple petals? The second one with the intersting focus - I will have to try that. And the third one - The tiny blossoms in the centre!
Beautiful, Titania!!
I didn't know the name of this flower.
Nice week.
Lovely canna...the top photos were slow to load, so I will be back..
Thanks, Annie
Judy, on TF the first one is a Giant spider Lily, Hymenocallis specie, perhaps Bermuda. The second is a shot of blue Agapanthus with a background of Daisies. and the third one is a Bromeliad just about to open its tiny flowers. I hope that helps you and I should have supplied some information to Luiz.
TITANIA!
Great post...Wonderful flowers...
Love the information too.
Cheers from Portugal!

A very enjoyable post, very interesting. Loved the photos. Thank you so much.
All great photos you are showing today. I love cannas as they are so easy to grow.
You have posted some great flowers, and I am enjoying my visit to your blog, with its exotic botanicals. My mother used to live in South Florida, and I believe much of what you grow she would have loved to try.
I love cannas but I've never tried growing them. Yours are very pretty. Interesting post.
Titania
Congratulations for your great success as "Guest Friend" in TODAY'S FLOWERS.
My best,

Cannas are pretty blooms, you're right they're exotic!
Canna is quiet commonly found here in Singapore too, there's a lot around the parks here.
What lovely Cannas, your garden must be lovely.
Last year I got an Arrowroot plant liking to grow as much of our food source as possible, thank goodness I left it in a pot. It is one of the few things surviving on washing up water. The flowers are similar to Cannas.
Great informative post and lovely colorful flowers, indeed!
Beautiful and exotic! Lovely choice for TF!
Very interesting post from a great gardener.
Lovely photos.
I could almost smell the scent of those flowers.
Thank you for visiting my blog with the moth pictures..
This island is nature lovers paradise, so much to see and discover!

These are lovely! I've never tried to grow them but we certainly get more than 6 hours of sunlight per day so perhaps I'll try growing some.
